Obituary

Memorial Services for Norma Strong, age 102, of O'Neill will be at 11:00 am Saturday, March 31, 2018 at the First United Methodist Church in O'Neill.  Rev. Brian Loy will officiate.  Inurnment will take place in the O'Neill Cemetery. Norma went to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, February 10, 2018 at Avera St. Anthony's Hospital in O'Neill.  Biglin's Mortuary of O'Neill is in charge of arrangements.

Norma was born on September 20, 1915, in O’Neill, NE, to Andrew and Lillian (Bowden) Wettlaufer.  She started school in Chadron, NE prior to her family moving back to O’Neill, where she finished her education.  On August 10, 1932, she married Harold “Joe” Strong in Neligh, NE.

After raising her children, Norma continued her education at Norfolk Beauty School.  Norma owned and operated Westgate Beauty Salon in Norfolk, NE. Together with her husband, they ran Strong Construction in Norfolk before moving to O’Neill in 1975 to continue their Grain Bin Business. Norma ran Step N Style Salon in O’Neill. She and her husband owned and operated several rentals and commercial properties throughout O’Neill including their last investment before Joe’s passing in 2000, Harold’s Trailer Park.

Norma loved to play cards. She was always up for a game of pitch but Bridge was her true passion. She was an active member of the Bridge club and she enjoyed getting the girls together for an afternoon of cards and conversation. She loved to spend time with her family and friends. She also loved to cook for people and arguably made the best sloppy joes around. She never missed an episode of her favorite shows: Jeopardy, Wheel of Fortune, and the Molly Brown Polka show.  Norma kept her loved ones up-to-date with the latest news, weather and fashion trends. In 2017, during St. Patrick’s Day, she was so honored to meet the governor of Nebraska as one of the six residents at Evergreen Assisted Living Center that were over 100 years old. Norma was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the O’Neill Presbyterian Church. She was very loved and will be missed very much by all that had the pleasure of knowing her.

Norma is survived by three children; Glenna (Ono) Nay of Temecula, California, Wayne (Janet) Strong of Abilene, Kansas, Terry (Pat) Strong of Manhattan, Kansas; 14 grandchildren, along with two grandchildren that Harold and Norma raised; Cyndi (Ed) Riekens of Cheyenne, Wyoming, and Brian (Deb) Stevens of Page, Nebraska; 28 great-grandchildren; many great-great grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Mary Lou Wettlaufer of O'Neill; brother-in-law, Lester Strong, of Norfolk, NE, many nieces and nephews; and her special canine friend, Boomer.

Norma was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Joe in 2000; one daughter, Janet Stevens in 1966; one sister, Evelyn; three brothers, Gerald, Kenneth, and George.

I am truly sorry hearing about the death of Aunt Norma. She lived a great long life. At her 100th birthday celebration, I still can't believe this, but she remembered who I was. Hadn't seen her in many, many years. As I was putting info into my family history, I noticed that I have the date of August 10, 1934 as their marriage date. Please check. Please inform of memorial service date. Love and Prayers!
