Obituary for Betty Bishop

Private Graveside Services for Betty Bishop, age 88, of O’Neill will be at a later date. Betty passed away on Wednesday, August 25, 2021 at Arbor Care Center in O’Neill, NE. Memorials may be directed to the family for future designation. Arrangements are entrusted to Biglin’s Mortuary of O’Neill.

Betty Jane Johnson was born August 30, 1932 in O’Neill, NE to Leslie and Emma (Hayes) Johnson. She attended O’Neill High School, graduating in 1950.

After graduating, Betty worked for Consumers Electric (now NPPD). She met Cecil Bishop while he was in town installing REA poles as an electrician. Although Cecil’s next job took him to Guam, the two stayed in touch and on July 11, 1954, Betty married Cecil in Alhambra, California. The couple lived in California for a time, Newton, IA, and then settled in O’Neill in 1956. Cecil was a truck driver while Betty stayed home to raise their three boys, Chad, Bill, and Michael. She also had a home studio where she worked for the O’Neill Photo Studio hand tinting photos. The couple were happily married for 39 years until Cecil passed away suddenly in 1993, after stomach cancer surgery.

Betty loved to paint, to spend time with family, to play music on her keyboard, and to do needlepoint. She even had a show at the O’Neill Public Library featuring her needlepoint. Betty was also an avid animal lover. Cooking was a passion and what Betty enjoyed most. Betty loved spending time in the kitchen, creating delicious meals for her family.

Betty is survived by three sons, Chad (Colleen) Bishop of Grand Island, NE, Bill (Mary) Bishop of Pierre, SD, and Michael (Julie) Bishop of O’Neill, NE; seven grandchildren, Heather (Nate) Bradley, Andrew (Shanna) Bishop, Matthew Bishop, Sheila (Mitch) Ehresman, Breanna Bishop, Wren Hollingsworth, and Justin Bishop; 7 great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Betty is preceded in death by her parents, Leslie and Emma Johnson; husband, Cecil Bishop in 1993; and two brothers, Marvin (Lona) Johnson, and Claude (Jeanette) Johnson.
